So this was not shot with any video cameras, just 15,000 photos from a Canon EOS 400D DSLR, and Final Cut Pro. The effect is very nice, the actions are softened, not jarring, and excellent spooky effect. Good actor used too:

Souljacker says in the comments: "...most shots where the camera pans with the character we shot bursts of about 60-90 quick consecutive frames at about 3fps... we also got him to alter his movement slightly which I think helped create the strange feel, as for the gear I used my own camera 350d for some tests then borrowed a friends 400d for the main shoot... I don't think that it would put too much strain on the camera ... at least I hope it didn't anyway :)"

This is absolutely, mind-staggering. It's 9 minutes, but just watch, from beginning of the universe to it's potential end. And if you're wondering why the sequence of 'mankind' is so short, well, in the relative timeline of the universe, we *are* just the blink of an eye. Amazing work. And a further thought: to think this was mostly done outside, having to deal with nature's lighting conditions and weather. Wow.

The peeps responsible for Sixth Sense have come up with something I'm liking, it's called Luminar and it can even be plugged into your basic home lamp. Your lamp does not act as a robotic arm, of course, Unless you rig it that way, but I'm thinking about 3 of these for Augmented Reality interaction and multimedia? Verrrry interesting.

For graphics work, probably not the greatest, but it's Intriguing nonetheless! Enjoy the presentation!:

Sixth Sense Projection Technology

After watching the Sixth Sense presentation and Skinput (by Microsoft), I find Sixth Sense pretty darn elegant. Towards the end of the vid the demonstrator of Sixth Sense shows that by meeting someone for the first time, you can easily see info about that person scroll on the surface of their clothing. Love tech and all, but that's a strange way to get to know someone! At some point, no matter how impressed we are by our own awesomeness, a tree is just a tree to look at, and the sky for that matter. I'd hate to depend on this stuff all the time (ruh roh, it broke), because I might not know how to cross a street. :P Anyway, still impressive. This is a snoozy kind of vid for the Midnite Theatre, but since I opened the door to Tech, what the hey:

Lady GaGa's Living Dress by Hussein Chalayan

I blogged about Hussein Chalayan's 'animatronic' outfits before; kInd of wished that description hadn't been linked with his works because I think they perform far beyond 'robotic' movements. There's fluidity and motion and it's Amazing.

So here's Lady GAGA's living dress as performed at Monster Ball Feb 2010. It's very hard to get a good vid on this. This first selection has a very good shot of the Metamorphic process of the dress in the first 1:20 minutes. Pretty darn magical. Then someone's fool head gets in the way and the vid is pretty much hard to watch from then on. Sound off after the 1.5 minute mark is good too, the bass really hammers the digi-cams:

And for the sake of my being an obsessive compulsive, here's a vid that takes you all the way to the near end of the performance, where you can see the back of the dress and yes, Lady GAGA can walk in that outfit. Feat of engineering and DESIGN!!! (And I'd suggest keeping the sound off):

And I'm not done yet! This vid is clearly not a great angle with the dancers in the way, and with the main Morphing actions of the dress happening in the front. But it's just delightful that for all the tech, GaGa has to activate her wings manually with a bit of fumbling and then a flip up. VOILA!!! Now she's a freekin' goddess:

This and Katy Perry's LED dress does it for me. I wanted to add Bono's Laser Diode leather jacket, which looks amazing once the smoke machines hit it. But you can check it out here, along with other celebs in tech fashion.

Midnite Theatre Presents: Cleopatra 2525, 'Mind Games'

...not too keen on my Buffy selection, so I'm going to run an additional 'main' reel!

Cleopatra 2525 was a quirky offering for a sci fi show; lots of blue screen, cheap sets, funky costuming, and a freekin' interesting and odd premise for the fate of humanity in 2525. When a set doesn't take itself too seriously, it means Fun, and it wraps in just 20 minutes. 'Mind Games' does those good things smart people with low budgets do; utilize an artistic eye, play the scenes like they mean it, and just be pretty damn creative with what they got. T.J. Scott's camera work, Always Awesome. Story, fast, violent, and of course, messes with the characters heads. Can you tell I like those sort of eps? ;)

...Wow, the preview chosen for this widget is kind of lame. I almost reconsidered listing it, but then I remembered why I liked this ep. Cheerleaders, a vengeful mystery assailant using witchcraft to take them out, mother/daughter issues, heroine wants to be normal issues, and of course it all wraps in a Big Fight. Buffy was never a tidy show; angst had a way of riddling it to death. And you do have to get used to the 'contemporary' style, unique patter, all of which is of Joss Whedon's own making. This is such a great 'girl's issues' show though! And Cordelia Chase (vroom vroom)!!

I guess the WB is no longer offering Buffy for free, so here you go. The Amazon widget may not work in Firefox, but it does work in Safari.

...Saw this at the Huffington Post, the vid is courtesy of E! Online, so about 20 sec of commercial (and not the best flash designed player) folks!

So does this belong at the Midnite Theatre? It is a FLASHING, LED DRESS, HOO YEAH! I mean just watch that thing, the still pics do not do it justice, and I'm appreciating the soft lines of the dress more in this video than in the stills. Awesome. You can turn the sound off if you don't want to hear the Girl Chat.

I do wonder about that battery pack though. Mmm, not good for your organs, but for one night at the Met? OK, maybe won't hurt. ;)

'The Three Girls' by Angela M. Sheehan

I saw this over at Make Online, and I totally dig this, go to the link to read just a little more on how this little movie came about but I will excerpt here:

This is a stop-motion collage I made, based on drawings by my little
sister (six years old at the time). Back in 2005, I was studying
animation and taking classes in childhood development/learning and
wanted to combine the two. I decided to make a movie with her over
Thanksgiving break. I gave her some paper and crayons and asked her to
write me a story. I took some video of her drawing and showing her
grandparents the story and describing it to them. It was fun to see how
she told the story differently to each person and all the little
details she included when asked about different parts of the drawings.
Back at school, I scanned her drawings in and printed out copies that I
then animated to her narration. My dorm room was a giant mess of paper
and a camera for about a week. It was a blast. I showed her the
finished product over my winter break and she loved it. I would've
loved to involve her more in the actual animation process, but my
school was too far away.

The Vimeo upload doesn't have as much bkgrd info as the Make article. I think this is such a great little film. If there's a very young kid in your life you still have the chance to make something cool and memorable too!

I'm writing this quite late at night so I'm not feeling so verbose--'Jose Chung's From Outer Space', is...Crazy. And FUNNY. And kind of scary (well, meaning the unease that the X-Files patently brings that reflects back to us, how utterly manipulated or self-deluded we may be). I don't think it's necessary to be familiar with the show to appreciate the Insanity of this script. It's freekin' beautiful. It's why I look up at the sky at night, too. ;)

Fashion Designer Cassette Playa introduced 'Augmented Reality' at her Fall/Winter 'Neuromance' Show. Augmented Reality, as defined by Wikipedia is:
a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery.

This happens in Real Time. Check it out. The second piece is Hugo Barroso's 'Pret a porter' installation, also utilizing Augmented Reality.

I have the ep playing at Hulu right now, and when Na'Toth (Julie Caitlin Brown) attacks Deathwalker, it's as violent as any crazy street fight full of desperation and fury.

Season one Babylon 5 was so cool; rich with complex characters and aliens on a faraway space station that was politics-deep in intrigue and manipulations. You'd think that might play a little stuffy and boring but heck no, not when the next scene might be someone kicking someone's ass. ;)

'Deathwalker' had those qualities of high drama, tension, the weight of history, and rather sober commentary on the weaknesses of us sentient beings--all wrapped up in 40+ minutes. Satisfying!

This is my favorite B movie. Or C movie. Or possibly D movie, depending on *your* standards. I never watch it with the volume on, I just like to look at the moving pictures on occasion and I LOVE it!! The models, the sets, the suits, the mysterious Mer-Women with their common wigs and bell bottom pants.

There's possibly no real plot to this, I wasn't paying attention. It has an overall badness. But when I fill in my own narrative (as the pictures roll by), I get a sense of the rather useless struggle of men (the 'nauts) at odds with the world they're exploring, and the rather effortless existence of a bunch of mystery women. Neither of which, interestingly, ever connect. It's quite metaphorical.

So that's what I get when the sound is off. Plus, is that Mamie van Doren in a paper hat??? :D

Programming your Old Skool Theatre :)

....at first I planned on just featuring one favorite ep, toon, stop motion, or movie here, once a month, and then I realized; freek, this is a Theatre, let's go back and try it the old fashioned way! The formula of an old skool theatre would have been, newsreel (I think), travelogue perhaps, 3-4 cartoons, and then the Feature, yes? I would have liked to have thrown in some stage acts or orchestra interludes too, but good acts are hard to find. The newsreel is pretty much replaced by me with the Oooreel and later, you'll experience the Whatreel.

So what follows now is a denser theatre experience. It also means I had to reach out and pull content from Youtube too, which I was reluctant to do here because one, you never know when something's going to stay up at youtube, and two, quality's awfully dinky. But for an Intermission or Concessions Ad, it works out fine!

...I'm going to try something. I'd love to have a Midnite Theatre here at the blog, I think that would be so cool. I want it to be a Quality viewing (thus the venue I'm picking) and have something Feature just once a month to give people a chance to find time for that popcorn to get popped, buy that favorite drink of choice from the supermarket, and clear the favorite chair of last month's laundry. I know not of what I speak. My chairs, Sir, are not full of laundry. (They're full of books). :p

I promise not to get too artsy fartsy with the selections (well...possibly on occasion). I think midnite theatre is just that highly entertaining, possibly BAD indulgence of viewing pleasure that you just want to unwind to. Pure escapism. A beginning, middle, and end that leaves you pretty satisfied (unless it's artsy fartsy), and y'know, maybe has some scantily clad chicks.

The selection might motivate you to hunt through your own video or dvd collection (or a friend's), I Totally welcome that. I just hope you enjoy the viewing suggestion. Onward!

Preview comments (snore; no wait! keep reading):

I've been watching my old vhs tapings of Xena from circa 1996--yes, taped during first airings--and mostly I'm just enjoying the old airing format with commercial breaks and episode interstitials. I'm loving it. But what's kind of neat is that viewing eps again with the breaks has reminded me of Why I had liked an episode in the first place.

Case in point: This glorious indulgence in vengeance, violence, and pursuit in 'A Necessary Evil'. My Gods, *will* Good be able to Triumph over Psychotic (and Godly) EVIL??? (bites nails). It's part 2 of a story arc (the first is...'The Quest'! But look that ep up yourself if you like). What I had first noticed about this ep upon first viewing was that the cast and story were made up entirely of Just Women; the Evil Women, the beleaguered Heroines, and background Women who must suffer explosions and scanty costuming. ;) Yet despite all the eye candy and opportunity for superficiality, it's a darn good, entertaining story! So enjoy!
